Korn Ferry just bought scale. Most recruitment agencies need the opposite.

Korn Ferry is buying AMS to place a professional every 90 seconds, across more than 16,000 people. The biggest recruitment deal of the year never once mentions technology, and for the UK's 30,000 recruitment agencies, that is exactly where the opportunity is.

Korn Ferry has agreed to acquire AMS, and the number that matters is this: the combined business will employ more than 16,000 people and place a professional in a job roughly every 90 seconds.

That is the strategy in a sentence. Buy scale and coverage, then place more people through more channels than anyone else can. It is a serious deal. AMS brings recruitment process outsourcing, early-careers hiring and contingent workforce programmes; Korn Ferry brings executive search and consulting. Together they own the top of the market.

One word the announcement never uses is technology. That makes sense for enterprise RPO, where scale and people will always have a place. But it points to the bigger shift underneath the deal: over the next decade, recruitment will be shaped just as much by how well agencies use technology to match the right people to the right roles.

The deal happens at the top. The market lives below it.

There are around 30,000 recruitment agencies in the UK, most of them independents and boutiques competing on specific desks. Their opportunity is not to match the giants on size, but to work smarter than a firm that big can on any single role. That comes down to how fast and how accurately they shortlist. Sending a client three strong candidates this afternoon, rather than five near-misses next week, is what wins an account and keeps it.

There is a lot of time to win back here. Recruiters spend roughly 23 hours per hire on screening; working through 500 applications takes 8 to 25 hours before a single call, and close to 80% of CVs never get past the first screen. Scaling the current process does not change that maths. Better matching does.

The opening this creates for everyone else

When the biggest players merge to compete on scale, the answer for everyone else is not to chase scale of their own. It is to compete on what scale is worst at: precision on the desks they already know better than anyone.

That is the bet JobVantage is built on. It does not replace an agency's ATS. It sits on top of the systems already in place and returns a ranked shortlist, with the reasoning shown and a score against each match, in minutes rather than days. In partner testing that has meant around 24x less time to a shortlist and a 17-minute turn from CV to a client-ready spec. Then it carries the work forward: find the decision-maker, enrich the contact, draft the speccing outreach.

The deal is not a threat to independent agencies. It is a signal, and a positive one. The top end is consolidating, and at the same time the tools that let a smaller agency compete on quality are finally good enough to matter. That is the real headline for the mid-market. Recruitment is not being replaced by technology. It is being sharpened by it, and the agencies that lean into that now will feel the benefit first.
