On 15 June, Indeed launched Sourcing Assistant, part of its Smart Sourcing product, and the pitch is worth reading closely. Instead of building Boolean keyword strings, you describe the role in plain language, and the AI looks beyond keywords at related skills and recent candidate activity across Indeed’s 370 million sourceable profiles. Indeed says roles close 30% faster, applicants sourced this way are 2.9x more likely to be hired, and recruiters save 7 hours a week.
The line that matters most comes from Thomas Bergman, Indeed’s VP of Product, who put it plainly: "Today’s recruiters aren’t short on candidates. They are often short on time." His point is that strong people slip through when there is too much volume and too little time to work it. Indeed’s own survey backs it up: 71% of hiring managers say higher application volume makes it harder to find qualified people, and 93% have lost top talent to a slow process.
Why this is validation, not a threat
When the biggest job board in the world launches a tool whose whole argument is that keyword search misses the right people and you should match on real fit instead, that is the JobVantage thesis stated by Indeed. It is the case we have made from the start. The problem in recruitment is not a shortage of candidates. It is the time it takes to find the genuinely right ones, and the number of good people who never make it past a keyword filter.
So the instinct to brace when Indeed makes a move this size is the wrong read. Indeed has just spent its own launch proving that match quality is the game. The question for an agency is no longer whether AI matching matters, because Indeed answered that. It is whose tool is built for the way an agency actually works.
Where Indeed’s tool stops, and the agency desk begins
Sourcing Assistant is built for employers hiring directly into their own roles on Indeed’s 370 million profiles. That is a real capability, and for a direct employer a good one. It is a different job from the one an agency does. An agency does not hire into its own vacancies. It matches candidates to client roles, specs the right person into a company that has not even advertised, and lives on the relationship and the desk knowledge a job board never touches.
That is the gap JobVantage is built for. It does the same core thing Indeed is betting on, matching beyond keywords on real fit, but pointed at the agency workflow and sitting on top of the ATS or CRM you already use. Upload a candidate CV or a job spec and it returns a ranked shortlist, scored on role fit, seniority, location and employment type, with written reasoning on every result. Then it carries the work forward: find the decision-maker at the target company, enrich the contact, and draft the speccing outreach off the actual match.
Why the agency version suits the desk better
Indeed matches at the scale of a population. An agency needs to match at the depth of a desk, and stand behind that shortlist in front of a client. JobVantage is built for exactly that: the reasoning is shown so a recruiter can make the judgement call, a hard filter means you never spec into a competing agency, and seniority and location are treated as real constraints rather than loose keywords. And because it is an overlay, there is nothing to rip out and no new database to move your candidates into.
The results line up with what Indeed is seeing on its side. In testing with development partners, agencies using JobVantage have cut shortlisting time by around 24x, turned a CV into a client-ready spec in about 17 minutes, and lifted reply rates on outreach by roughly 1.9x. It is the same principle as Indeed’s 7 hours a week saved, applied to the part of the market a job board does not reach.
The direction of travel is settled
Indeed calling out that recruiters are short on time, not candidates, and putting real money behind fixing it, tells you where recruitment is going. There are around 30,000 recruitment agencies in the UK, and most still run their matching on keyword search and instinct, the exact thing Indeed has just moved away from. The agencies that make the same move now get a head start that is hard to close later.
None of this is recruitment being replaced by technology. It is recruitment being sharpened by it, and Indeed has just spent a product launch making that case for everyone. If you want to see what a scored, explained shortlist looks like on your own candidates and roles, book a demo and we will run a real match in the session.
